the prayer room

There is a longing in my heart lately, a longing to have a place where I can meet with God and just BE with him. In my mind, it looks like this....having coffee together under his perfect, quiet sky, just talking, listening, knowing each other. But I cannot drive to this place every time I want to get away with God. I need something closer to home, yet something beyond talking to him over dirty dishes and folded laundry.

My friend Regina let me visit her prayer room the other day - an upstairs room in her home devoted to worship and intercession. There are some worship cds, open Bibles in several translations, a journal and pen, a couple of pillows, shelves of books, an old Mennonite hymnal and an acoustic guitar propped up in a small corner. The walls are bare, awaiting color, the window wears an outdated ruffle, and the door is yet to be hung, but already it is a sanctuary. The room has one purpose. Meet with God.

I don't have an extra room in my house, nor an extra closet, to dedicate as a special place away from distraction, but the idea of the prayer space has laid itself so heavily on my heart that I can't shrug it off.

If there is a special place you run to, or a way that you get away with God for prayer that needs bent knees, would you share it with me? I would so appreciate the inspiration!

  1. What a great idea! I love this! I wanna a prayer room, too.

One thought, if there is no physical space to set one up, is maybe a "God basket" or "prayer basket" in which you have packed a bible, ipod with your favorite inspirational music, a journal/notebook, maybe a candle (?)etc., that you could at least grab to take with you when you have a few extra minutes alone on a front porch or backyard. A mobile prayer room.

Or maybe a comfy chair in the corner of a bedroom with all those things on a side table, ready to be used...?

You definitely have me thinking... a prayer room/place sounds heavenly :)

  2. A mobile prayer room - I like it! My friend Regina suggested something like this too, and it had never crossed my mind. Hmmm....
